Nestled around a small courtyard which is accessed either from the Beyazit Square or from one of the main streets outside the Grand Bazaar beside the Sedef\u00e7iler gate it is undoubtedly the place where book lovers can enjoy browsing and where you can make unexpected findings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.francescmorera.com\/galeriasLugares\/estambulMercados.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sahaflar book market<\/a> has a long history dating from the 15th century. <em>Sahaf<\/em>, an Arabic word, is the store or person who is engaged in buying and selling old books, documents, etc., and &#8220;\u00c7ar\u015f\u0131s\u0131 Sahaflar&#8221; means the old book market. In ancient times, the libraries supplied the needs of the students from madrasas (religious schools), for it is near several of them. After the construction of the Grand Bazaar, built in 1460, these libraries were grouped in a common area on the inside and remained in the covered bazaar until the earthquake of 1894, after which they moved to the current location of Sahaflar becoming the main place for printing and distribution of books in the city. Subsequently it was completely destroyed by fire in 1950 including its thousands of manuscripts of calligraphy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.anamoralesblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_8092.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3060 size-medium lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/200;margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" title=\"Orient Shop, in the book market\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.anamoralesblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_8092-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8092\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/anamoralesblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_8092-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/anamoralesblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_8092-449x300.jpg 449w, https:\/\/anamoralesblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_8092.jpg 1000w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/a>The Metropolitan Municipality of Istanbul confiscated unburned part of the market in order to maintain its living historical value. The wooden shops were replaced by concrete shops far stronger, and became the current book market. Not only books of all types new and old are sold: textbooks, novels, dictionaries, religious texts or ancient maps, it is also the ideal place to purchase one of these beautiful hand-painted Ottoman miniatures. Had long wanted to have one and this time I took the opportunity. It is said he has got the biggest miniature collection in Turkey. And even jewels that might be in the windows of a museum. I could hold in my hands a gigantic legislation manuscript roll of the sultanate era that was selling for 9500 euros and a booklet with wood pulps of 3000 euros. No doubt enjoys his work and the relaxed atmosphere of the old bazaar. Finally we decided for a miniature inspired by a famous 1906 Turkey painting called &#8220;The tortoise trainer,&#8221; by Osman Bey, and that today can be seen in the museum of Pera. In the painting Osman Hamdi Bey cleverly satirizes the slow and inefficient attempts in the reform of the Ottoman Empire, represented through the attempts of an anachronistic historical figure to train turtles. The painting depicts an old man in traditional dress holding a traditional Ottoman flute <em>\u201cney\u201d<\/em> with which he is trying to &#8220;train&#8221; the turtles at his feet. Although it was not well understood at the time the painting achieved greater importance in the coming decades, as presaged the Young Turk Revolution of 1908 that ended with the autocratic rule directly by the Sultan (replaced by the Three Pashas regime after the 1913 coup) and laid the foundation for the entry of the Ottoman Empire in World War I on the side of the Central Powers and to later partition and dismemberment of it. A sheet with so much meaning that made us even more pleased with the purchase. And with the new friends.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Also with the help of Mehmet we already framed it.
