{"id":87517,"date":"2012-10-01T00:01:35","date_gmt":"2012-09-30T23:01:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prueba.anamoralesblog.com\/pilgrims-in-burma-shwedagon-paya\/"},"modified":"2023-03-22T01:21:24","modified_gmt":"2023-03-22T00:21:24","slug":"pilgrims-in-burma-shwedagon-paya","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anamoralesblog.com\/en\/pilgrims-in-burma-shwedagon-paya\/","title":{"rendered":"Pilgrims in Burma: Shwedagon Paya"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Burma<\/strong> is a country of deep Buddhist convictions, since Buddhism arrived to the country almost a thousand years ago.<br \/>\n<strong>King Anawratha<\/strong> was persuaded by <strong>Arahan monk<\/strong> to convert to Buddhism that we know today, <strong>Theravada<\/strong> branch, which is practiced in <strong>Thailand<\/strong>, <strong>Sri Lanka<\/strong>, <strong>Laos<\/strong> and <strong>Cambodia<\/strong>.<br \/>\nSo, in 1057, Anawratha sent an army to subdue the Mon ethnic group, whose capital was <strong>Thaton<\/strong>, which conserved the <strong>Tripitaka<\/strong> Buddhist canon.<br \/>\nFrom this moment, the <strong>Mon<\/strong> culture became part of the culture Burmese or <strong>Bamar <\/strong>and began the race to build for centuries the most beautiful temples, monuments and pagodas that we see all across the country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Among them all, there are three places considered especially sacred for pilgrimage, these are: The <strong>Shwedagon<\/strong> Pagoda in Yangon, The <strong>Golden Rock<\/strong> in <strong>Kyaiktyio<\/strong>, Bago and <strong>Buddha Mahamuni<\/strong> in Mandalay. I will dedicate three entries to describe each one.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #b19356;\">Pagoda Shwedagon, Yangon<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.anamoralesblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Shwedagon_Paya_41.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"attachment noopener wp-att-854 noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-84118 alignright lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 199px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 199\/300;margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" title=\"Shwedagon Pagoda\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.anamoralesblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/Shwedagon_Paya_41-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"Shwedagon Pagoda\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/anamoralesblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Shwedagon_Paya_41-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/anamoralesblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Shwedagon_Paya_41.jpg 603w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/a>Its origins are now moot, but it is attributed an age of 2500 years, the fact is that there are Buddhist monks writings indicating that it was built before the <strong>Buddha&#8217;s death<\/strong>,which occurred in 480 BC. So we can say that it has witnessed all the events of the country along the centuries, has survived abandonment, looting, fires, and the numerous earthquakes that even came to demolish the top. <strong>Shwedagon is an icon of the country<\/strong>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is an awesome pagoda, a hundred feet high, which stands on the ancient <strong>Dagon Hill<em>,<\/em><\/strong> and dominates the city. In Bago there is another pagoda even higher, but <strong>Shwedagon<\/strong> is so revered by the relics that houses inside, according to legend, eight hairs of the Buddha and a piece of cloth. The inside of the pagoda is made of brick, and is not accessible, but has been covered by tons of golden plates, a tradition that began in the fifteenth century by a queen who donated her weight in gold to preserve it. The top of the stupa, is crowned by a <strong>Hti<\/strong> covered with <strong>5,448 diamonds<\/strong> and <strong>2,317 rubies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.anamoralesblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Esquema-de-la-Pagoda-Shwedagon.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"attachment noopener wp-att-856 noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-84120 alignleft lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 218px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 218\/240;margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" title=\"Shwedagon Pagoda scheme\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.anamoralesblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/Esquema-de-la-Pagoda-Shwedagon-272x300.jpg\" alt=\"Shwedagon Pagoda scheme\" width=\"218\" height=\"240\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/anamoralesblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Esquema-de-la-Pagoda-Shwedagon-272x300.jpg 272w, https:\/\/anamoralesblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Esquema-de-la-Pagoda-Shwedagon.jpg 580w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 218px) 100vw, 218px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/a>The huge complex is not only home to <strong>Shwedagon<\/strong>, but around dozens of temples, shrines, 64 minor stupas and places to make offerings or for pray. The atmosphere of meditation and tranquility it is breathed here is great. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.francescmorera.com\/en\/galeriasLugares\/yangon_en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yangon<\/a><\/strong> has about four million inhabitants, but in here, nothing disturbs the pilgrims. People come to pray and spend time here, prostrating, resting in a temple, even taking a nap, entire families visit and spend the day. Religiosity floats in the atmosphere, and envelops you, touches your heart &#8230; I&#8217;m sure people feel very comforted by coming here to pray, or simply strolling and resting between his temples because it is a very nice place.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.anamoralesblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Shwedagon_Paya_52.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"attachment noopener wp-att-855 noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-84119 alignright lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 198px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 198\/300;margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" title=\"Praying in Shwedagon\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.anamoralesblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/Shwedagon_Paya_52-198x300.jpg\" alt=\"Praying in Shwedagon\" width=\"198\" height=\"300\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/anamoralesblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Shwedagon_Paya_52-198x300.jpg 198w, https:\/\/anamoralesblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Shwedagon_Paya_52.jpg 597w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/a>Nowadays there is no doubt that it is a must for tourists passing through the town, but this does not interfere with the devotees nor detract an iota of charm. We all get overwhelmed when accessing because for more pictures you have seen and more information you have read , not really expect to find such a temple here. The dimensions of the pagoda are stunning, and everything is perfectly preserved and shiny. Undoubtedly a place that is hard to forget.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For <strong>Rudyard Kipling<\/strong>*, that, to me, genius that has portrayed so well all these latitudes with those books so entertaining and colorful, <strong>Shwedagon<\/strong> was: <em>&#8220;a golden mystery mystery raised itself on the horizon, a beautiful winking wonder that blazed in the sun, of a shape that was neither Muslim dome nor Hindu temple-spire&#8230; a beautiful wonder&#8221;<\/em>.<br \/>\n* <em>From Sea to Sea and Other Sketches \u2014 Letters of Travel vol. 1 (1899)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-84787 size-full lazyload\" title=\"The Shwedagon Shrine complex\" data-src=\"https:\/\/anamoralesblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Yangon_109.jpg\" alt=\"Shwedagon Pagoda.
